Summer in South Florida. You don’t need a professional electrician – like Emerald Isle’s licensed and insured electricians serving Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Lighthouse Point – to tell you that it’s going to be hot. OK, it’s going to be very hot but thanks to wonderful people like Willis Carrier, who invented air conditioning, the heat is going to be manageable.
And, you’ll be happy to know, that there are steps you can take this summer to help ensure that your electric bill will be manageable, too.
SAVING ON AIR CONDITIONING ELECTRIC COSTS
- Blackout Curtains are your friend. As the name suggests, blackout curtains block light from entering through your windows. They also block the heat that comes with that light.
- Keep your thermostat set to 78 degrees. If it’s 90 degrees outside, you will definitely feel the difference when you walk in the door. If you want to cool down a little more, turn on a ceiling fan.
- Turn the thermostat up when you’re not going to be home. If you’re going to be out of the house – for work, errands or a night out – turn the thermostat up. If you’re just going to be running to the grocery store, there’s no need to adjust it. If you’re going to be at work for eight hours, though, the Department of Energy estimates that turning the thermostat up anywhere from seven to 10 degrees can save you up to 10 percent on your electric bill. And don’t turn it down to 60 when you get home! It’s not going to cool your house any faster.
