First Things First: Stay Calm and Act Fast
The key to controlling any fire is to remain calm and act quickly, but never recklessly. Electrical fires are different from other types of fires and must be handled with extra caution.
What Causes Electrical Fires?
Electrical fires can start for a variety of reasons, including:
- Overloaded power strips or outlets
- Faulty wiring or damaged cords
- Malfunctioning appliances
- Improper use of extension cords
- Space heaters too close to flammable materials
Knowing the source of the fire helps you take the correct action. But if you’re unsure, always treat it as an electrical fire to be safe.
Steps to Put Out an Electrical Fire Safely
1. Cut the Power If You Can Do So Safely
If the fire is small and you can reach your circuit breaker without putting yourself at risk, shut off the power to the area immediately. This helps prevent the fire from spreading and makes it safer to extinguish.
NEVER use water on an active electrical fire. Water conducts electricity and could cause electrocution.
2. Use a Class C Fire Extinguisher
For electrical fires, only use a fire extinguisher labeled for Class C (or multipurpose extinguishers marked A-B-C). Aim at the base of the fire and use a sweeping motion.
If you don’t have a Class C extinguisher, do not use another type because it could make the fire worse or put you in danger.
3. Use Baking Soda (Small Fires Only)
If the fire is very small (like in a toaster or power strip), baking soda can help smother it. Baking soda releases carbon dioxide, which can starve the fire of oxygen. However, be cautious because it is not a guaranteed solution.
Do not use flour or sugar, as they are flammable and can cause the fire to explode.
4. Evacuate and Call 911
If the fire is spreading, the room is filling with smoke, or you’re unsure about handling it, then evacuate immediately and call 911. Never try to be a hero. Lives are more important than property.
Tips on Preventing Electrical Fires
- Don’t overload outlets or extension cords
- Replace damaged electrical wires and cords immediately
- Schedule regular inspections by a licensed electrician
- Use surge protectors for your valuable electronics
- Install smoke detectors near electrical equipment
When to Call a Professional
